Oxford U.K.

After a visit to Oxford, the 19th centrury American novelist Henry James felt that his heart "would crack with satisfied desire".

This is not a universal response, but Oxford, like Cambridge, brings out the hyperbole in many visitors. What these university towns have in common is the weight of history and of academic prestige as well as the beauty of ancient buildings in lovely landscape - all within the distance of a short walk.

Oxford began it's history in 1167, a little earlier than Cambridge. As a town well known for car manufacture as well as for the university, there is a stronger connection here than in Cambridge between "town and gown".
